<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\u201cAfter the Fulanis systematically captured and made Ilorin their territory, they sacked the old Oyo Empire in 1835\/1636. They were still not satisfied with their victory; they wished to extend their rule deep into the heart of Yoruba land. Thus in 1840, they set to capture Oshogbo, a Yoruba town. The Fulanis, under the command of Ali, the Hausa Balogun (Generalismo)of Ilorin, laid siege on Osogbo.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n When the king of Osogbo realized that the Ilorins were too strong for the Osogbo army, he summoned the Ibadans for help. Ibadan immediately sent some auxiliaries to Osogbo under the command of Obele alias <\/em>Mobitan, and Alade Abimpagun. As this force could not stop the Ilorins, another contingent was sent to Osogbo under a more experienced leader. But still, the Ilorins won every battle and gained more ground.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n When Ibadan realized that the Ilorins were becoming more threatening to Yoruba land, they sent a large and stronger force under Balogun Oderinlo to crush the intruding forces and Jammas of Ilorin. When Oderinlo and his men arrived at the battlefield, they realized that things had gone worse than they thought.<\/em> As soon as the message from Oderinlo reached Ibadan, the Bashorun (General)wished he could send Elepo to Osogbo but could not go against the wish of other war-chiefs. The Bashorun gave Elepo a cow to worship his god, Ori, and pray for the victory of Ibadan at the war-front.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n At the war-front, the Ibadan could not attack the <\/em>Ilorins during the day because Osogbo was practically in a plain and the Ilorin horses might have <\/em>advantage of them with disastrous results.<\/em> About a mile from the Ilorin camp, they halted and arranged the order of the attack.<\/em> The reason this watchword was chosen was <\/em>because the river Osun had to be crossed in entering Osogbo from the south, and anyone who could not tell this was likely to be an enemy.<\/em> 1. In any warfare including electioneering, there is always strength in numbers. It is no news that democracy is a game of numbers and you cannot coast any victory without outnumbering the opposition. TIn Nigeria the two big parties no doubt have the numbers, so to face them in battle, foot soldiers that will outnumber them must be raised, else defeat is inevitable. Now raising followers that will outnumber the opposition is sure a daunting feat that will require time and money. But what is not possible with new technologies and media today only if you know how to harness these possibilities. The Labour Party is gathering momentum in numbers because majority of the Youths are pitching their tents with this Party because of Peter Obi the Presidential flag bearer for the party who is becoming a stronger force by the day. The digital media is their major tool for mobilising people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAt the war front, the Ibadan could not attack the Ilorins during the day because Osogbo was practically in a plain and the Ilorin horses might have the advantage of them with disastrous results\u201d. The sad reality in Africa today is that the new and smaller parties are trying to contend with the established parties on the same pedestal using the same grass-root Mobilisation strategies. You can\u2019t outsmart them in this because they have perfected and pocketed that system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey decided to attack at dusk when the Ilorins would no longer be able to use their horses\u201d. Since the established parties and their candidates have already hijacked the grass-root machinery, the new parties and their candidates must look to raise loyal followers who will eventually vote for them through another means that cannot be manipulated in any way. Digital and social media has tremendous opportunity to raise huge followership but most candidates and parties in Africa are still using these casually instead of maximizing the possibilities. Again the Labour party is exploring this in a major dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n About a mile from the Ilorin camp, they halted and arranged the order of the attack. You see that they didn\u2019t gamble the defeat because they knew what was at stake; the future of the entire race. Some contenders in Nigeria go for election battle with the mindset of, \u201cwe can fight another day if we lose this one\u201d. This is sad indeed. It shows that there are no real contenders for the leadership in this nation different from the crop of inefficient leaders we have had in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Ilorins could not offer the slightest resistance\u201d. Never prepare to win by a little margin because there could be manipulation of results at this point. If you want to contend at all then prepare to win. If you truly want to win, then do all it takes. Don\u2019t say we have done our best; we leave the rest to God when you sure know that your preparation for victory is not complete. Are you not mocking God if you refuse to service your car before a premeditated long journey but instead decide to leave everything to God? Sure, God will not do for you what you are well able to do for yourself. They could not show their faces in the open field for the fear of the Ilorin horses, and for about 20 days after their arrival at Osogbo, they could not fight outside the town thickets. Oderinlo suggested that Elepo, a brave Ibadan warrior was badly needed at the war-front. Elepo had been rejected by the war-chiefs of Ibadan for his actions <\/em>at the late Agbamaja expedition.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nA Decisive Battle Plan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
They decided to attack at dusk when the Ilorins would no longer be able to use their horses. About 2: 00 pm, the well prepared Ibadan army left the gate of Osogbo for the battlefield. They were to keep a strict watch and arrest anyone suspected to be a spy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/alivedestinymedia.com.ng\/elect20\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/07\/fulani-warriors.jpg\")

The Osogbo army and the earlier auxiliaries were to handle the <\/em>center of the battlefield, chiefs Abitiko and Labuju were to command the right wing, Balogun (General)Oderinlo with the rest of the Ibadan war-chiefs were to form the left wing of the army. The Ilorin camp was then attacked at midnight. The watchword was \u201cElo ni <\/em>owo odo?\u201d (How much is the ferry fare?).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stampede engulfed the Ilorin camp as the Ibadan army set it on fire. The Ilorins could not offer the slightest resistance; they were smoked with the gunpowder of the Ibadan guns. This attack was a success for the Ibadan. Some Ilorin war chiefs were captured in the attack. Prominent ones were:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. One of the sons of Ali the commander in chief;<\/strong><\/em>
3. Chief Lateju;<\/strong><\/em>
4. Ajikobo the Yoruba Balogun of Ilorin.<\/strong><\/em>
The first two were released while the latter two, being Yoruba by birth, were regarded as traitors and were executed. This was a huge victory for the whole of Yoruba land. After the Osogbo victory, Ibokun, an Ijesa town not far from Osogbo was taken by the <\/strong><\/em>Ibadans for being an ally of Ilorin\u201d.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nLessons to be learnt<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
This is a beautiful tale of conquest achieved by meticulous war strategies which should be adapted in electioneering warfare as well. Let us highlight the lessons below:

3. Know your opponent\u2019s strength and never confront her on that pedestal:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

5. Develop a foolproof battle strategy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
6. Prepare for a landslide victory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
